A new nature trail at Mirvac's Gainsborough Greens development in Pimpama has become an outdoor classroom for local students putting their design technology skills into practice to help care for native wildlife.

The new 3.4km trail attracted the attention of young Gainsborough Greens resident and Pimpama State College student Diego Restrepo, who encouraged his classmates to help him build a collection of nesting boxes to give animals in the area additional habitat.

The efforts of Diego and his classmates will be on show to the community once the boxes are installed later this week, ahead of the official opening of the trail with a family event including a guided tour and free morning tea on Sunday May 18.

Diego said he had always had an affinity with wildlife and wanted to use his school project to help raise awareness about native fauna.

"For my design and technology class, my teacher suggested we make nesting boxes and I thought the Gainsborough Greens nature trail would be the perfect place for them," he said.

"It took us about two months to produce 26 nesting boxes of different shapes and sizes to provide safe shelter for all the animals I often see around my home, like possums and birds.

"I hope when people see the nesting boxes they think of all the animals that live in the area and make an effort to help look after them."

Mirvac masterplanned communities Queensland development manager Russell Berlee said it was fantastic to see young people eager to protect wildlife, and he hoped the nature trail launch event would help people of all ages to better connect with the environment.

"I commend the initiative taken by Diego and his classmates to help make this part of our Gainsborough Greens community even more unique and special," he said.

"Mirvac is always conscious about balancing development with the needs of the environment, which is why we have created the nature trail - which not only preserves bushland but also provides a beautiful walkway connecting two stages of Gainsborough Greens for easy pedestrian access.

"We invite our residents and members of the wider community to join us on May 18 for a tour of the nature trail and a free morning tea, which will be a great day out for the whole family.

"The nesting boxes will be installed by then, so visitors may even be able to catch a glimpse of wildlife making themselves at home in the new purpose-built nature corridor."

Those wanting to participate in the nature trail walk should meet at 9:45am at the Swan Road entrance to the Gainsborough Greens walking trail. The walk will commence at 10am.

Mr Berlee said the walk would be guided by a National Heart Foundation Walking Groups Coordinator, accompanied by leading horticulturalist John White.

"This will be a fun and informative activity to suit people all ages and fitness levels. It's a great chance to get outside and be active with the family and learn more about local plants and animals along the way," he said.

"Mirvac will be supplying a free morning tea and water bottle for each participant, with a pair of binoculars as a prize for one lucky visitor to help them spot the wildlife."
